I worked at Starbucks for three years. I've had the same conversation about a thousand times--after a while, it just kind of pops out:
Customer "Small coffee."
Me "Okay, a tall drip." Yeah. I never pushed it though. How could I? It DOESN'T make sense. Curse Starbucks for naming their small "tall". At least Venti makes sense, when you know the reasoning behind it (venti means 20 in Italian, and the Venti is 20 oz. Of course, you have to be a barista or Italian to know that.)
I drew the line at the proper calling out of frappucinos, though. I'm sorry, but a "Venti, half-caf, 1 1/2 pump vanilla, with whip, coffee frappucino" is quite enough without having to add "blended coffee" on the end. And I won't even go into the lowfat/blended milk confusion. Harumph. I am so thankful I don't have to work there anymore. Or even go in there, since I don't drink coffee. Phew.

Today when I went into Starbucks (I have coffee rules...I'm only allowed to go on certain days...or else I spend too much money!) the man behind the counter knew what I was going to order before I even asked for it! "Tall soy latte...?" he asked--which, of course, was a small.

Maybe the fact that he knew what I was going to order means that I need to make more strict coffee rules?

:)
